My bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) photography in 2010 took place on the Chilkat River near the Tlingit village of Klukwan and the town of Haines, Alaska.
Bald eagles come to the area at the confluence of the Tsirku and Chilkat Rivers because of the availability of spawned-out salmon and open waters in late fall and winter. The open water is due to a deep accumulation of gravel and sand that acts as a large water reservoir whose water temperature remains 10 to 20 degrees warmer than the surrounding water temperature. This warmer water seeps into the Chilkat River, keeping a five mile stretch of the river from freezing. This area is known as the Chilkat Bald Eagle Council Grounds.
In addition to photography of bald eagles, I did some landscape photography of the nearby Takhinsha Mountains, and Takhin Ridge which are popular heli-skiing destinations. I also was able to work in time at Mendenhall Lake and the foot of the Mendenhall Glacier near Juneau, and photos of the mountains and glaciers along the Lynn Canal while traveling on the Alaska State Marine Highway Ferry system.
